Success and gradation (May 1937), 2014
Twelve photographs (digital print) 28 x 42 cm. c.u. mounted on wood.
Edition of 3 + 2 P. A.
This work presents six tonal scales ranging from black to light grey, together with six bulletins from the Barcelona Meteorological Observatory corresponding to the third and eighth of May 1937, the period in which the so-called May Events took place (1).
In this series of photographs, the aim is to establish a phenomenological dialogue between the historical-political weather, symbolised by the gradation or “fading” of the colour black, which metaphorises the emergence of the anarchist social revolution in the summer of 1936 until its virtual end in May 1937; and the meteorological weather on those days: atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity or the strength of the wind.
(1) The May Events, which took place between 3 and 8 May 1937 during the Civil War, were characterised by clashes between communists and anarchists in the streets of Barcelona. These tragic events, which resulted in more than 280 deaths, represented a significant confrontation between the two factions. After the Events, the anarchists were stripped of the organs of power and their revolutionary influence was weakened.
