Strata (1936-39), 2014

Thirty-six photographs, 22 x 30 cm. each.
Total surface approx.: 160 x 205 cm.

The title of this set of thirty-six photographs of clouds, taken between 1936 and 1939 and from the Meteorological Observatory of Barcelona, alludes to a type of cloud present on the horizon in the form of a band, but also to the classification of individuals in society according to their position on the socioeconomic scale. From this premise, it is intended to establish, on the one hand, the relevance of the atmospheric conditions during the Spanish Civil War, since a very cloudy sky prevented the bombing of the fascist aviation over the population. On the other hand, the importance of the Republican flag stands out, whose colored stripes came to protect the most disadvantaged social classes. This is why the images of the clouds have been colored with the tones of the flag, creating a gradient of red, yellow and purple, in order to compose a kind of frieze or phenomenological landscape that can be associated with both a sunrise and a sunset.
