Ubi nihil vales, ibi nihil velis, 2012
Canvas, wood. 210 x 240×100 cm.
Arnold Geulincx was a Baroque philosopher of Flemish origin, a determinist and Calvinist. He held the view that human beings are merely spectators of their actions, subject to the will of God. His aphorism “where you can do nothing, desire nothing” was used by Beckett on several occasions to highlight the rootlessness, sterility of language and impotence of action.
